Olympus officially announce OM-D E-M10 and reveals 25mm F1.8, compact 14-42mm, and 9mm F8 Fish-Eye

Olympus unveils the OM-D E-M10, a smaller and budget-friendlier Micro Four Thirds OMD series with many parts borrowed from the E-M5 - starting with its 16 megapixel sensor. It also manages to snag a few features from the flagship E-M1, including its TruePic VII processor and built-in Wi-Fi for image transfer and remote control.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 Key Specification :

  • 16 megapixels
  • Four Thirds (17.3 x 13 mm) CMOS sensor
  • TruePic VII Imaging Processor
  • ISO 200 - 25600
  • 3″ tilting screen with 1,037,000 screen dots
  • 1920 x 1080 (30p), 1280 x 720 (30p), 640 x 480 (30 fps) video recording
  • BLS-5 Li-ion battery
  • 119 x 82 x 46 mm
  • 396 g
  • Price : $699.99 / £529.99 (body only)
  •           $799.99 / £699.99 (with 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 lens

It falls short of its siblings with '3-axis' image stabilization rather than the '5-axis' system in the E-M5 and E-M1, and doesn't provide an accessory port, but these concessions help nudge the E-M10 to an attractive price point. The Olympus OM-D E-M10 will be available in March 2014.

Alongside the OM-D E-M10, Olympus has also announced three lenses. First up is the M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8, a classic 50mm focal length in full frame. The lens will cost $399.

Second is the 9mm F8 Fish-Eye Body Cap Lens (which Olympus technically considers an 'accessory'); this offers a 140° angle of view in a tiny plastic body in the cost of $99.

Finally there's a new 'pancake' kit zoom for the E-M10, the M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ, which features an electronic zoom. The lens will cost $349.

Samsung NX30 adds tilting EVF, improved display, more Wi-Fi features and added two 16-50mm lens

Samsung's just announced the flagship mirrorless camera, in the name of the NX30. It has the same 20 megapixel sensor and Hybrid AF system from the NX300, but has a more traditional SLR-style design. What stands out the most is the camera's XGA electronic viewfinder, which can be pulled away from the camera and tilted upward by 80 degrees. The 3-inch, 1.04 million dot AMOLED display is 70% brighter than the one on the NX20, and is fully articulated.

Samsung NX30 Key Specification :

  • 20 megapixels
  • APS-C (23.5 x 15.7 mm) Sensor
  • DRIMeIV Image processing
  • ISO 100 - 25600
  • 247 focus points
  • 3″ Fully articulated 1,036,000 resolution screen
  • Electronic Viewfinder
  • 1920 x 1080 (60p), 1280 x 720, 640 x 480, 320 x 240 video recording
  • Built-In wireless
  • NFC
  • BP1410 lithium-ion battery
  • 127 x 96 x 58 mm
  • 375 g

Pricing and availability have yet to be announced.

Samsung added two new lenses to its NX mirrorless camera line, one for pros, and another designed to serve as a smaller alternative to the kit lens. Both lenses range from 16-50mm, but the first is a premium design with the 'S' designation, whose bulkier design accommodates an F2.0-F2.8 aperture and optical image stabilization. The second lens is a retractable F3.5-5.6 power zoom with OIS, which the company says offers improved performance over the 18-55mm kit lens.

Samsung says the 16-50mm F2.0-2.8 S ED OIS lens offers greater 'precision, high quality materials and value control'. It has a metal body, includes weather and dust sealing, and uses what Samsung calls an 'ultra precise stepper motor'.

The 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 Power Zoom ED OIS lens, on the other hand, is designed as a portable option whose motorized zoom allows for smoother zooming while shooting video.

Samsung did not announce pricing and availability, only noting that the lenses will be on display at CES 2014.

Sony announces A7 and A7R: first full-frame mirrorless cameras

This is the moment waited by everyone, a full frame mirrorless! A full frame mirrorless interchangeable lens! Sony has announced the A7 and A7R - the world's first consumer-oriented full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Externally, the two bodies are nearly identical and feature a pentaprism-like EVF housing, generous handgrip and plenty of manual controls. The differences are internal - sporting a 36 megapixel sensor, the A7R has no optical low-pass filter and is limited to contrast-detect autofocus, while the less expensive A7 has a 24 megapixel sensor with a low-pass filter and on-chip phase detection.

Both bodies are designed around the Sony NEX E-mount, though new 'FE' lenses are needed to take advantage of the larger sensor. They also feature a new BIONZ X processor, XGA OLED 'Tru-finder', 3-inch LCD, Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC, and 60p video recording. Existing lenses for Sony's NEX range of APS-C mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras will mount and work as expected, though the scene will be cropped (though Sony gives you the option not to do so if you can live with some inevitable vignetting). Sony Alpha lenses can also be mounted via either the LA-EA3 or LA-EA4, the latter of which includes SLT autofocus technology. See our first impressions report for more.

Sony A7 Key Specification :

  • 24 megapixels
  • Full frame (35.8 x 23.9 mm) CMOS
  • Bionz X image processing
  • ISO 100-25600
  • 117 Number of focus points

Olympus Officially Announces OM-D E-M1 and M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 'Pro' zoom

Finally! After few months of rumors and a year of hope, Olympus officially announces OM-D E-M1. The true flagship for the company micro four third. Why I said a year of hope? Because rather than calling it the follow-up to the E-M5, Olympus says that the E-M1 is actually the 'successor' to the E-5, a Four Thirds DSLR introduced back in 2010. Yes the new has on-chip phase detection, which promises to focus legacy Four Thirds lenses (using the optional MMF-3 adapter) at much faster speeds than previous Olympus m4/3 cameras. I personally tested it with my Olympus 14-54mm f2.8-3.5 II from Robin Wong and indeed, it focuses quick! It is comparable with DSLR speed even it isnot as fast as native micro four third lens.

Olympus OM-D E-M1 Key Specification :

  • 16.3 megapixels
  • Four Thirds (17.3 x 13 mm) CMOS Sensor
  • TruePIC VII imaging processor
  • ISO 100-25600 in 1/3EV or 1EV increments
  • '5-axis' IS
  • 81 Number of focus points
  • 3″ Tilting 1,037,000 dot LCD
  • Electronic Viewfinder with 2,360,000 resolution
  • 1920 x 1080 (30 fps), 1280 x 720 (30 fps), 640 x 480 (30 fps)
  • Built-in wireless
  • Dust, splash, freeze resistant
  • BLN-1 lithium-ion
  • 130 x 94 x 63 mm
  • 497 grams
  • $1399.99 Body only

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 will be available in October 2013 and available in Black

Olympus also unveiled a high-end standard zoom to match the E-M1, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm 1:2.8 PRO. It offers a 24-80mm equivalent range, is dust-, splash- and freeze-proof, and uses a manual focus clutch design similar to the 12mm F2 and 17mm F1.8 primes.

Olympus has also announced the development of a matching M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO telezoom, which is scheduled to be released by the end of 2014.

Covering an equivalent range of 24-105mm (in 35mm format), the Zeiss 16-70mm F4 zoom uses lens coatings to reduce flare and ghosting, and uses four aspherical elements and a glass ED element.

The 18-105mm F4 power zoom covers a 27-157.5mm equivalent range and is operated via a lever on the side of the lens barrel. The lens uses two ED glass elements and three aspherical elements.

The 50mm F1.8 will be familiar to NEX fans as it's already in Sony's lineup in a spiffy new shade.

The black 50mm F1.8 and 16-70mm F4 zoom will be ready to ship to consumers in September; the 50mm prime will cost about $300 and the 16-70mm will cost about $1000. The 18-105mm F4 power zoom will be available in December for $600.

  • 3″ tilting LCD screen
  • 23 Number of focus points
  • 1920 x 1080 (60p, 60i, 50p, 50i, 30p, 24p) video recording
  • built in electronic viewfinder that can be tilted upwards 90 degrees
  • Built in Wi-Fi with NFC
  • 123 x 71 x 55 mm (4.83 x 2.78 x 2.15″)

The Panasonic GX 7 with 14-42 II Silver Kit Lens will be priced at RRP $1,099.99 and $999.99 for body only. It will start shipping estimated on October.

My Opinion : The newer sensor in Panasonic GX7 is one of the best in mirrorless now. The built in and tiltable electronic viewfinder seem interesting too. It seem it is much value buy compare with Olympus E-P5. Well personal judgement of course. Not until I got chance to hands on on Panasonic GX7 itself.

Alongside with the GX7, Panasonic also launch the Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2 - the fastest autofocus lens ever created for the Micro Four Thirds system.

Fujifilm announces X-M1

It is time for Fujifilm X-M1 to join the mirrorless competition together with X-E1 and X-Pro 1. Fujifilm X-M1 is the company entry level mirrorless that packed with all spec same with it's sibling.

Fujifilm X-M1 Key Specification :

  • 16.3 megapixel
  • X-Trans APS-C CMOS sensor
  • ISO 200 - 6400
  • 3.0 inch tiltable screen
  • 49 point AF
  • 5.6fps burst
  • 1920×1080 30p, 1280×720 30p video recording
  • built in wi-fi

The Fujifilm X-M1 will hit the store by July with price tag of $699.95 for body only.

In the same time, Fujifilm announce new kit zoom, the XC 16-50mm F3.6-5.6 OIS that offers a 24-75mm equivalent range and optical stabilisation, but has no aperture ring. The kit lens will come together with X-M1 with price tag $799.95.

Fujifilm also has introduced the XF 27mm F2.8, a compact 'pancake' lens. It's just 23mm thick and weighs only 78g, making it by far the smallest X-mount lens. unfortunately there is no aperture ring, so X-Pro1 and X-E1 owners will need to update their firmware to allow aperture setting from the camera's rear control dial. It'll be available in black and silver, at an MSRP of $449.95.

My Opinion : Great! I been hearing how great is X-Trans sensor rival against full frame sensor. The entry level Fujifilm X-M1 is priced at affordable range, ready to compete with all mirrorless on current market. If I wasn't fond on my Olympus camera, I wouldn't mind grab 1 for myself anytime. In fact, I am tempted to invest on Fujifilm system too in near future.

We know this day will come from Samsung. Samsung has announced the Galaxy NX: the world's first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera running the Android operating system.

Samsung Galaxy NX Key Specification :

  • 20.3 megapixels
  • APS-C (23.5 x 15.7 mm) CMOS Sensor
  • DRIMe IV Imaging processor
  • ISO 100 - 25600
  • Samsung NX lens mount
  • Electronic viewfinder with SVGA resolution (800x600px)
  • 4.8″ fixed LCD screen
  • 1.6GHz quad-core processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB internal memory with expandable microSD
  • 3G, 4G LTE and Wi-Fi
  • 4,360mAh battery
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Pricing and availability still unknown but we wouldn't be surprise if it cost more than RM 3,000 and above.

My Opinion : Samsung has overtake apple in terms of smartphone. But how about camera segment? Samsung is trying to be difference from other competitor now in terms of mirrorless camera. Yes, they are not the first one using android OS powered camera but at least, their's not half baked. Now my main concern will be how's Android system handling the camera performance? Is the auto focus fast enough? Is the battery life good enough for me to use for whole day shooting? Will the camera have sudden OS crash? It is interesting concept but I am not convincing enough if the three question I asked doesnt satisfy me. Of course image quality is another section to argue. Meanwhile, I still prefer stick to a proper camera.
