Sony announces A7 and A7R: first full-frame mirrorless cameras

This is the moment waited by everyone, a full frame mirrorless! A full frame mirrorless interchangeable lens! Sony has announced the A7 and A7R - the world's first consumer-oriented full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Externally, the two bodies are nearly identical and feature a pentaprism-like EVF housing, generous handgrip and plenty of manual controls. The differences are internal - sporting a 36 megapixel sensor, the A7R has no optical low-pass filter and is limited to contrast-detect autofocus, while the less expensive A7 has a 24 megapixel sensor with a low-pass filter and on-chip phase detection.

Both bodies are designed around the Sony NEX E-mount, though new 'FE' lenses are needed to take advantage of the larger sensor. They also feature a new BIONZ X processor, XGA OLED 'Tru-finder', 3-inch LCD, Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC, and 60p video recording. Existing lenses for Sony's NEX range of APS-C mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras will mount and work as expected, though the scene will be cropped (though Sony gives you the option not to do so if you can live with some inevitable vignetting). Sony Alpha lenses can also be mounted via either the LA-EA3 or LA-EA4, the latter of which includes SLT autofocus technology. See our first impressions report for more.

Sony A7 Key Specification :

  • 24 megapixels
  • Full frame (35.8 x 23.9 mm) CMOS
  • Bionz X image processing
  • ISO 100-25600
  • 117 Number of focus points

  • NP-FW50 lithium-ion battery

Sony A7R Key Specification :

  • 36 megapixels

  • 1920 x 1080 (60p, 60i, 24p), 1440 x 1080 (30p), 640 x 480 (30p) video recording
  • Built-In WiFi and NFC
  • NP-FW50 lithium-ion battery
  • 127 x 94 x 48 mm
  • 465 g

The A7 will be sold in a body-only kit for $1699 or with a new 28-70 F3.5-5.6 OSS lens for $1999. The A7R is not bundled with a lens, and is priced at $2299. Both cameras are expected to ship in December.

Covering an equivalent range of 24-105mm (in 35mm format), the Zeiss 16-70mm F4 zoom uses lens coatings to reduce flare and ghosting, and uses four aspherical elements and a glass ED element.

The 18-105mm F4 power zoom covers a 27-157.5mm equivalent range and is operated via a lever on the side of the lens barrel. The lens uses two ED glass elements and three aspherical elements.

Sony Malaysia officially launches Xperia Z Ultra

Today, Sony Malaysia officially launch a brand new Android smartphone, Xperia Z Ultra, a bigger brother for the Xperia Z. It is also Sony first attempt in creating phablet because this giant is come with 6.44" screen size.

The event started with welcome remarks by emcee and followed up by product presentation by Jason Smith, Director of Marketing, Southeast Asia & Oceania, Sony Mobile Communications.

Here are the main spec of Sony Xperia Z Ultra :

  • 6.44" with 1080p resolution, Triluminos screen with X-Reality Engine
  • 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 Krait 400
  • Adreno 330 GPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB internal memory with microSD slot
  • 8-megapixel back facing camera with Exmor RS sensor
  • 2-megapixel front facing camera
  • IP 58
  • 3,000mAh
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean

Check out my first hands-on video on the Sony Xperia Z Ultra.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra is the first Android smartphone with 6.4" full HD Triluminos Display & powered by X-Reality mobile engine. It is as slim as 6.5mm, waterproof and dust-resistant rated as IP58. It also one of the first mobile phone that packed with latest processor from Snapdragon, which is Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor that clocked on 2.2Ghz quad core. Sony Xperia Z also allowed write and sketch with any pencil and selected stylus or pen.

On first glance, the physical design is resemble alot on Sony Xperia Z itself. It might look like an up scaled product but actually they do have a little difference on side.

On right side, only micro USB port available while left side, the 3.5mm jack (none covered and it is water resistant), microSD & micro Sim card slot, Sony signatured powered button and volume rocker can be found. While on bottom right is the speaker itself.

Unfortunately the launcher itself wasn't running the latest one as I seen on Youtube during the international launch on June. Not to mention it is still powered by Bravia Engine 2 instead of X-Reality. According to a XDA senior, 14.1.B.1.414 update and onwards will have the new UI and X-Reality display. I hope Sony Malaysia will roll out the update as soon as possible because the new launcher indeed looks better and much polished. Not to mentioned the X-Reality will make the user experience much better especially on media comsuption.

I have abit mixture between love and hate on the writing/sketching ability in the Xperia Z Ultra. It is good idea that the phone allowed you to write or sketch with any pencil, pen or stylus as long as it met this two criteria - at least 1mm diameter and also can conduct electric. I said it is good idea because you don't need to worry when your stylus gone missing. You can simply replace it with pencil. Of course, don't worry you will scratch the screen. The only thing I hate it was it doesn't come with touch pressure like Wacom. Your hand can't rest on the phone during sketching. Nevertheless, it is pretty good innovation. I had yet to try putting a paper on top the phone and try to sketch.

Sadly the camera a little bit let down. It doesn't come with LED light though I actually doubt is anyone care using it for photography. The low light performance wasn't that superior either since the sensor size is small.

* SBH52, Smart Bluetooth Handset that allowed use to use it as handset or music by pairing it via NFC. It is splash proof as well *
* Sony Smartwatch 2 *

* Sony official leather flip case *

Sony Xperia Z Ultra will be available in all Sony store from now with RRP RM 2,299. Sadly it is HSDPA version instead of LTE. In conjunction of Hari Raya celebrations, Sony giving out free premium phone casing worth RM80 along with 8GB microSD card and also an Xperia t-shirt for whoever purchase the device. Sony will have roadshow at Lowyat Plaza starting 5-11 August.

Sony reveals Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R & Cyber-shot RX100 II

Remember the little tiny camera by packed with huge full frame sensor from Sony? Yup you got it right! Sony Cyber-shot RX1 just got a replacement, known as RX1R. It is exactly same with RX1 except, RX1R has no anti-aliasing (AA) filter.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R Key Specification :

  • 24.3 megapixels
  • Full frame (35.8 x 23.9 mm) CMOS sensor
  • ISO 100 - 25600
  • 35 mm f2 lens
  • 25 Number of focus points
  • 3″ fixed LCD screen
  • 1920 x 1080 (60, 50, 25, 24 fps)

The MSRP of the RX1R is exactly the same as the regular RX1 ($2800), which will continue to be sold.

My Opinion : Kinda disappointed the RX1R wasn't a huge upgrade from RX1. So for existing owner of RX1, move on for the next gen RX. This isn't worth it unless you prefer extra sharpness on ur images due to lack of AA filter.

Sony announced RX100 II too, as replacement for the first generation RX100. It features a new 20.2 megapixel 1-inch back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor, which Sony claims is 40% more sensitive in low light than its predecessor. The 3-inch WhiteMagic LCD now articulates (84 degrees up, 45 degrees down), allowing for easier composition. Another major addition is a Multi Interface Shoe, which can not only accept an external flash, but also an electronic viewfinder or stereo microphone. The RX100 II also has Wi-Fi and NFC capability, which allows for one-touch photo transfer between camera and smart devices.

Sony Cyber-shot RX100 Key Specification :

  • 20.2 megapixels
  • 1″ (13.2 x 8.8 mm) CMOS sensor
  • ISO 200 - 25600
  • 28–100 mm F1.8 - F4.9 lens
  • 25 Number of focus points
  • 3″ tilting LCD screen
  • 1920 x 1080 (60 fps)
  • NFC
  • Wi-Fi

The RX100 II will be available next month for $750.

My Opinion : Physical design wise, nothing much change except the hotshoe and also tiltable LCD screen at the back. However, it is a huge upgrades in terms of sensor and also Wi-Fi enable. Sadly the lens still pretty slow on telezoom. Wish they could put f1.8-2.5 like Olympus did on their XZ series.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra goes official

Finally, Sony Xperia Z Ultra goes official! It is the company first Phablet Android powered device. It all weighs in at 212 grams (over 50 grams more than the Xperia Z) but the body has been slimmed down to a mere 6.5mm uniform thickness. In addition, use the same design language as Xperia Z and Xperia Tablet Z - OmniBalance. It also come with TRILUMINOS display with Sony bravia engine which reproduces a greater range of rich, natural colours to deliver true and natural shades.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra will become direct competition for Samsung Galaxy Note range since it capable of pick up any pencil or pen with conductive tip and you can start writing or drawing on the screen. You can also write during calls, so you’ll always be ready capture your thoughts as they happen.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Key Specification :

  • 6.4 inch with 1080p resolution
  • 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 Krait 400
  • Adreno 330 GPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB internal memory with microSD slot
  • 8-megapixel back facing camera with Exmor RS sensor
  • 2-megapixel front facing camera
  • IP 58
  • LTE
  • 3,000mAh
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean

Sony Xperia Z Ultra will launch globally from Q3 2013 in white, black and purple. Pricing still unknown.

My Opinion : Finally! Sony managed to chase and even surpass all it's competitor in terms of hardware. They decided to skip S600 processor and went ahead with S800. Not to mentioned the ability to draw on the screen with pencil or pen it just sound good for artist! Now, I would love to see the review how good is the screen as well as is there any press pressure when using pen/pencil to draw.

Sony Xperia M will be available in Black, White, Purple and Lime except the dual-SIM version of Xperia M lack of Lime color option. Both Xperia M and Xperia M dual will hit the shelves in Q3 this year, but their pricing is yet to be announced.

My Opinion : I wonder how many mid range Xperia phone Sony plan to release. They have Xperia SP and L isn't?

Sony announces Xperia ZR

Sony just announces Xperia ZR, a little brother for both Z and ZL. The Xperia ZR includes many of the Z's features in a smaller, more compact design.

Sony Xperia ZR Key Specification :

  • 4.55-inch TFT display with 1280 x 720 resolution with BRAVIA Engine 2 and OptiContrast panel
  • 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8064
  • Adreno 320 graphics
  • 2GB RAM
  • 8GB internal memory with microSD card slot
  • 13MP Exmor RS sensor back camera
  • NFC
  • Water & Dust resistant (IP55/IP58)
  • 2300mAh
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

To easily take pictures or videos under water, the Xperia ZR also has a dedicated camera button, something that was missed on the Xperia Z as well as last year’s Xperia V. Pricing and availability still unknown. Xperia ZR will come with black, white, pink and mint color.

My Opinion : On the first glance and thought, what is Sony strategy and plan? Why announcing same phone with Z and ZL? Then again, I guess Sony is listening to people wish. Sony Xperia ZR is the answer for people who want small and compact phone but with high spec. Shame that ZR doesn't come with 1080p display but I guess that will make sense if ZR gonna be cheaper than Z and ZL by at least 40%. Glad to see physical shutter button is back and also removable back casing at Xperia ZR. People, this is for you if you're looking for small and high performance phone :)

Sony announces Xperia SP and Xperia L

If Sony Xperia Z or ZL is too expensive for your consideration, why not take a look on the brand new mid range android Sony just announced?

Sony Xperia SP Key Specification :

  • 4.6-inch with 720 x 1280 pixel
  • 1.7GHz dual-core processor MSM8960T Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset
  • Adreno 320
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB internal memory with microSD slot
  • 8MP Exmor RS camera sensor with 1080p HDR video recording
  • VGA front facing camera
  • NFC
  • PlayStation Certified
  • 2370mAh
  • Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean
  • Black, Red and White Silver

Sony has confirmed that this “transparent element” has “customisable illuminations which you can personalise to alert you of incoming calls and text messages. And you can even set the illuminations to pulse to the beat of your favourite music.

Sony Xperia L Key Specification :

  • 4.3-inch FWVGA with 480 x 854 pixel
  • 1GHz dual-core processor MSM8230 Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset
  • Adreno 320
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB internal memory with microSD slot
  • 8MP Exmor RS camera sensor with 720p video recording
  • VGA front facing camera
  • NFC
  • PlayStation Certified
  • 1750mAh
  • Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean
  • black, red and white

Xperia L has the notification light at the bottom instead of transparent bar like it's sibling, Xperia SP.

Pricing for both SP and L is about $545 (Converted RM1635) and $387 (Converted RM1161) respectively in Europe.

My Opinion : Well, early Q1 of 2013 we are flooded with a lot flagship phone. It is good Sony willing to release some mid range for consumers had a better choice. Nothing to shout on the spec but probably the only improvement I see is the EXMOR RS sensor compare to the last year product (Xperia V/T/TX). Shame that Xperia SP wasn't pack with 1080p display.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs. HTC One vs. Sony Xperia Z

The war has come. Year 2013 is a year where most flagship phone went to 1080p display! Here are quick overview of Samsung x HTC x Sony flagship phone comparison.

Obviously we are comparing this based on hardware spec. User experience and features offer by the company would be individual preference. Seem like this gonna be tough competition and choices for consumers.

Thanks GSMArena for the chart!

Sony announces NEX-3N

Sony has announced the NEX-3N, its entry-level NEX camera, replacing the NEX-F3.

Sony Alpha NEX-3N Key Specification :

  • 16.1 megapixels
  • CMOS sensor
  • BIONZ imaging processor
  • ISO 200 - 16000
  • 25 Number of focus points
  • 3″ tilting LCD Screen
  • 1920 x 1080 video recording

Sony claimed that it has smaller body than the F3, and it is the smallest, lightest mirrorless camera to feature an APS-C sensor, despite featuring a built-in flash. Sony Alpha NEX-3N will available in Europe from March 2013. Price to be expected with current NEX-F3. The camera will be bundled with the e-mount 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 power zoom lens, to make the most of the camera's zoom control.

My Opinion : Once a year, Sony NEX series is getting refreshment and I am getting tired remembering the model naming convention. Yes it confuse me too much :P Nevertheless, nice to see Sony tried to shrink to size of mirrorless camera while maintaining the CMOS sensor. Perhaps in future we could see pocketable sized mirrorless?
